Care guide
Keep it soft, for years.
Handmade crochet is sturdier than it looks. A little care keeps the stitches even and the colours bright.

Washing bags, cardigans and scarves
- Fill a basin with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent.
- Soak the piece for a few minutes, then squeeze the suds through it gently. Don't rub or twist.
- Rinse in clean cool water until it runs clear.
- Press the water out by rolling the piece in a clean towel. Never wring crochet: it stretches the stitches.
- Reshape it with your hands and dry it flat in the shade.
For lined bags, spot clean the outside with a damp cloth whenever you can; a full wash is only needed now and then.
Gajras and crochet flowers
These never need water. Dust them with a soft brush or a hairdryer on the cool setting, and bend wired stems back into shape if they've been squashed in a drawer. Keep them out of strong direct sun so the colours stay bright.
Storing crochet
Fold crochet rather than hanging it, so it doesn't stretch. Store it somewhere dry, with a cotton bag over anything you put away for the season.

Scarves and winter pieces
Fringe looking tired?
Lay the scarf flat, smooth the fringe with damp fingers and trim any stray ends with sharp scissors. Wool blends relax back into shape overnight when dried flat.

How do I care for crochet items?
Hand-wash in cool water with a mild detergent, press out the water gently without wringing, and dry flat in the shade. Crochet flowers and gajras only need a light dusting.
